Willmer “Little Axe” Broadnax was a 20th century tenor gospel singer who was assigned female at birth but lived and toured with several bands as a man. When the Southern Gospel Singers, his first quartet, wasn’t winning him enough gigs, he formed his own troupe – the Golden Echoes – with his brother William and went on tour. After they disbanded following a dropped record deal he signed on with a series of other groups, including the Five Blind Boys of Mississippi and the Spirit of Memphis. Although he ceased touring after several decades he continued to record music with the Five Blind Boys in subsequent years. He received little press coverage following his death despite the discovery of his trans status.
Several of Broadnax’s songs are available for listening to on YouTube.
